Sports betting glossary
Sports betting words, explained simply.
- Odds
- The number that shows what a bet pays. Payout = stake × odds. Odds of 2 double your stake if the bet wins.
- Stake
- The amount you put on a bet.
- Potential payout
- What you get if the bet wins: stake × odds (stake included).
- 1X2
- The match result: 1 = home win, X = draw, 2 = away win.
- W1 / W2
- In betting apps: W1 (V1) = team 1 wins, W2 (V2) = team 2 wins.
- Double chance
- You cover two of the three outcomes: 1X (team 1 or draw), X2 (draw or team 2), 12 (no draw). Lower odds, lower risk.
- Total (Over / Under)
- You bet on the total number of goals or points. "Over 2.5" = at least 3 goals in the match.
- Odd / Even
- You bet on the match's total goals: even (0, 2, 4…) or odd (1, 3, 5…).
- Both teams to score
- Yes = each team scores at least once. No = at least one team doesn't score.
- Handicap
- A virtual lead or deficit given to a team. Handicap -1: the team must win by at least 2 goals.
- Single bet
- Just one game on the ticket.
- Accumulator
- Several games on the same ticket. The odds multiply, but every game must win.
- Coupon code
- A code that automatically loads all the games of a ticket into your app.
- Cash out
- Settling your bet before the games end, to lock in a profit or limit a loss. The amount is set by the bookmaker.
